The $118 million project marks Bong Joon-ho’s first film since parasitesThe film won the Palme d’Or in Cannes and made history as the first non-English language film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture.
The film is scheduled to be released in South Korea on February 28, 2025, and worldwide a week later warner bros. There are reports that the film may also premiere in South Korea before premiering in Berlin.
The film’s inclusion in the Berlinale lineup is a major achievement for the festival’s new artistic director Tricia Tuttle. Tuttle, best known for her work with the BFI London Film Festival, will host the Berlinale for the first time this year, bringing a fresh approach to the event.
based on Edward AshtonIn the 2022 novel Mickey 7, Pattinson stars in the movie as Mickey Barnes, a worker assigned to perform a dangerous mission on an ice planet. In the story, when one version of Mickey dies, another version of Mickey is created, retaining most of his memories. The cast also includes Steven YeunNaomi Ackey, Toni Colletteand Mark Ruffalo.
Bong Joon-ho not only directed the film, but also produced it through his company Offscreen, along with Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Dooho Choi.
The film was originally scheduled to be released in March 2024, then January 2025, and was eventually pushed back to late February. The project faced setbacks due to a Hollywood strike and production challenges, but due to delays, the project was completed.
The Berlinale, which runs from February 13 to 23, will also screen Tom Tykwer’s “Light” as its opening film. The full lineup will be announced on January 21st.
Under Tuttle’s leadership, the festival is expected to bring new updates, including new venues such as the Stage Bluemax Theater and Berlinale Hub75 at Potsdamer Platz.
