The Costume Institute’s spring 2025 exhibition, titled “Super Slim: Tailoring Black Style,” will focus on the style of Black men black dandyismcomplex history.
The exhibition and themes are inspired by guest curator Monica Miller’s book Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identities.
The Met says dandyism was a style imposed on black people in Europe in the 18th century, when well-dressed “dandy” servants became a trend.
The concept has also developed throughout history and the diaspora as Black people use style as a means of creativity, expression, and identity building.
Announcing the exhibition and theme on Wednesday, Williams, one of the show’s co-sponsors and creative director of men’s wear at Louis Vuitton, stressed the importance of celebrating a culture born from the dark origins of slavery.
“As an artist who was truly born and raised in the shadow of the African diaspora’s expansion into the country, having an exhibition that celebrates black dandyism and the African diaspora is truly a full-circle moment for me,” via Victoria said Genia Williams.
