The guidelines require institutes to consult the corresponding medical committee and complete a formal process so that all the necessary conditions are met properly including submission of the fee.
For universities considering the introduction of new courses, Postgraduate courses such as MD, MS, DM, MCh, PDF, PDCC or six year DM/MCh courses, the first step is to take the advice of the concerned committee. Once the approval or guidance is received from the Board, the concerned agency may take up the task of formulating a formal proposal along with the required fees.
As per the National Medical Commission (Physician Qualification Recognition) Regulation 2023, institutions offering under graduate or post graduate courses are eligible to seek inclusion into new qualifications not captured in the database of the National Medical Commission. This rule covers all new qualifications in every profession.
The application for any new postgraduate medical education qualification, which is not provided for in Schedules 1 to 6 of the Postgraduate Medical Education Regulations 2023, should be made to the NMC through a proper channel. A single application deposit of Indian Rupees Two hundred fifty thousand plus 18% Goods and Services Tax (GST) is payable at the time of application to pursue each qualification degree. Any discrepancies such as providing incorrect documents or not paying the necessary fees will lead to the rejection of the application.
Four new age medical specialties available in India at PG level clinical allergy and immunology
In India, clinical allergy and immunology is usually offered as a postgraduate(PG) diploma course. However, in several other countries, including the UK, Australia and the US it is more of an MSc or a Postgraduate Diploma. This course is aimed at providing students with the knowledge of diagnosis, management and prevention of allergic disorders. This course deals with various allergic diseases such as asthma, allergic rhinitis, urticaria and even anaphylaxis making the learners future doctors of any level competent and excellent in handling various allergic diseases.
Neuroendocrinology
In India, as is the case in many other disciplines, Neuroendocrinology is commonly offered as a PG diploma. In UK, Australia, and other countries, one obtains a Masters or PhD in neuroscience or endocrinology. This examines the information of the nervous and endocrine system and how the two systems communicate with each other. It includes control of stress, metabolism and reproductive systems, and aims at training specialists on how to control such systems to promote health and prevent diseases.
Hospice medicine
PG Diploma in Hospice Care is what is commonly available in India for postgraduate students. It is offered as either an MD or fellowship program outside India, particularly in the US and UK. In this course, students are taught how to attend to the needs of the patients tormented with life-threating and no possibility of healing illness. Major areas include pain management and control of symptoms plus assisting with the patient’s physical and emotional distress in order to enhance the quality of the patient’s life towards the terminal phase of their disease.
Neuropsychology
When pursued in India, Neuropsychology is often opted as simply a PG diploma in some of the institutes. As far as the other countries are concerned, such as the UK and Australia and the US, offer postgraduate degrees in Neuroscience and Psychology as clinical neuropsychology or neuropsychology. This is a course that aims at educating learners on aspects linking the brain and the patient’s behavior. It also includes content areas including cognitive evaluation, rehabilitation neuropsychology, and the way brain injury affects activities of daily living. This particular program is aimed at equipping practitioners who aim to work with patients suffering from neurological and psychological disorders.
