Lamborghini has recently advanced its electrification route by adopting hybrid technology. Currently, the brand has the electric trident Revuelto, Urus SE and the newly added Temerario. In a recent media interaction, Lamborghini Chief Technology Officer Rouven Mohr detailed the automaker’s approach to hybrid and electric vehicles, revealing key insights, strategies, challenges and future ambitions.

Unlike other hybrid cars, which can struggle to balance combustion and electric power, Lamborghini ensures the dominance of combustion in its hybrid models, Mohr said. “We went through major burns,” he explained. In Lamborghini’s hybrid models, combustion power remains the main driving force, with electricity playing a supporting role. He said this ensures that the driver experience remains engaging without the common pitfalls of confusing transitions between electric and combustion power that let other hybrids down.

Lamborghini electric cars: launch schedule
Last year, Lamborghini unveiled its electric car concept car, the Lanzador. Mohr provided an update on the timeline for the production version, saying it could launch around 2029 or early 2030. A full-scale electric Lamborghini is an important step that takes time and preparation. However, being part of the Volkswagen Group gives Lamborghini access to valuable resources and synergies that Mohr believes will help them maintain a unique identity in an increasingly electrified world.

Furthermore, if one were skeptical of a Lamborghini, or for that matter, any electric supercar, as a purist, Mohr supports electric drivetrains because he believes they offer performance-enhancing potential that cannot be achieved with internal combustion engines. “For example, having a pure electric motor on each wheel can do things that an internal combustion engine car can’t do,” he said.
One of the biggest challenges facing electric vehicles is weight, which is determined by the battery size and capacity required for range and performance. Mohr said he believes it’s just a matter of timing and engineering. “It’s still early days for an all-electric supercar,” he admitted, noting that while technology is advancing, achieving the perfect balance still requires work. One area where the chief technology officer believes Lamborghini can take advantage is lightweighting, a strategy the brand has explored in the past with models such as the Lamborghini Sesto Elemento. “Weight, charging speed and battery size – that triangle is something we need to solve,” he explained when discussing the continued development of an all-electric supercar.
The manufacturer has now shifted its entire product line to electric vehicles and is focusing on key factors like standing out while keeping the core Lamborghini driving experience intact.
