Kerala Women's Commission recommends termination of major Malayalam serials

this kerala women commission A series of important recommendations aimed at regulating Malayalam television serials have been made. The recommendations include limiting the number of series shown each day, reducing episode lengths and introducing stricter censorship measures to ensure content is suitable, particularly for younger audiences.
One of the key recommendations in the report is to stop mega-serials, long-running series that air every day on television. The committee recommended that the number of episodes of serials should be limited to 20 to 30 and only two serials per channel should be allowed to be aired per day. The committee also recommended banning reruns of serials to avoid duplication of content and ensure diversity.
The Women’s Council has also called for greater scrutiny of the series before it airs. They suggested that the existing Film Censorship Board, or possibly a new special committee, be responsible for reviewing and censoring these series. The goal is to ensure content is suitable for audiences, especially younger audiences, and to prevent the spread of harmful or inappropriate messages.
The recommendations follow a study conducted by the Kerala State Commission for Women, which surveyed 400 women aged 13 to 19 years from Malappuram, Kottayam and Thiruvananthapuram districts. young people. The survey found that many young people are worried about the impact of the series on viewers. A significant 43% of participants believed that series often convey the wrong message, while 57% expressed a desire to change the themes and content of these programmes. Research also highlights that children often imitate negative or immoral characters, especially female protagonists who are portrayed in harmful or negative ways.
The committee’s report further highlights the negative impact serial dramas can have on families and children. Many shows lack realism and their themes may lead to harmful imitation by young viewers, affecting their behavior and attitudes. The Committee is concerned that these programs may promote unrealistic expectations and negative values.
In addition to regulating serial dramas, the Women’s Commission has made other recommendations to improve the media environment. These include encouraging the production and broadcast of short films, web series and educational programmes. The committee also called for measures to reduce excessive use of social media by children, a ban on abusive language in television programs and stronger laws to prevent derogatory portrayals of women in the media. They recommended the implementation of stricter regulations to combat the spread of obscene content and the establishment of a committee to oversee the issues. In addition, the committee also recommended the establishment of a grievance panel to handle complaints related to harmful media content.
The study, conducted between 2017 and 2022, aims to address issues in various areas, including the impact of television content on society, especially the younger generation. The recommendations aim to create a healthier and more responsible media environment, ensuring content broadcast on television is respectful, educational and suitable for all viewers.
