
UDUPI: Deputy Commissioner Vidya Kumari K has directed officials to prioritize and implement scientific measures Conduct investigations into identified accident-prone areas within the jurisdiction to eliminate risks and ensure safety.
At the district road safety committee meeting held in Rajathadri on Monday, the deputy commissioner noted that 20 high-risk “black spots” were identified along national highways in the district between 2020 and 2022.
Quick action is needed in these areas requiring pedestrian crossings, zebra crossings, warning signs, high pole lighting, signal lights, roadside metal crash barriers, speed bumps on connecting roads, footbridges, proper drainage systems to manage water flow, she said , MS railings and other necessary infrastructure enhancements.
The DC stressed that adhering to road safety regulations and driving speed limits is crucial to preventing accidents and encouraged the public to put safety first. She emphasized the importance of scientifically setting up road crowns and suggested that before the start of national highway construction drawings, temporary road layout should be done to ensure smooth traffic and safety.
She further directed that buses plying in rural areas from KSRTC division in Kundapur must drop off passengers only at designated stops and not along national highways and steps should be taken to comply with this directive.
Officials of the CMC and the Public Works Department have also been directed to effectively utilize funds from the Action Plan of the Karnataka Road Safety Authority to implement necessary safety measures in accident-prone areas. The police department must take necessary measures to prevent accidents within the station premises.
SP Dr Arun K, NHAI Project Director Abdulla Javed Azmi, Public Works Department Technical Assistant JG Shanthala, CMC Commissioner Rayappa, District Information Officer Manjunath B and others were present in the meeting.
