New Delhi: Karnataka Home Minister, G Parameswaraannounced that all district deputy commissioners have been instructed to stop issuing eviction notice to farmers Waqf Lawconsider revenue records to be the final authority on land ownership.
“The chief minister has directed all deputy commissioners to withdraw any such notice or letter. The issue has now been resolved, although we are not sure of the possible future developments,” Parameshwara said.
The controversy began after reports that the Waqf Board claimed ownership of certain lands, which it claimed had been registered in its name 50 years ago. Parameshwara clarified that waqf claims will be valid only if they match the income records, otherwise they will be given priority.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar accused the BJP of earlier amending the Record of Rights, Tenancies and Crops (RTC) under the Waqf Act. “The BJP has started issuing notifications and changing revenue records under the Waqf Act. We will not allow any farmer to be evicted from their land,” he said.
The controversy triggered protests across Karnataka, with farmers in Hungvad village in Vijayapura and Kadkol village in Haveli demonstrating against the alleged eviction orders. Reports of violence by villagers in Kadkol over the repossession of Waqf property reflect rising local tensions.
