The 49-year-old Vice President Kamala Harris has now become among the millions signing up on TikTok, a social media platform whose latest popularity is already being capitalized on by @kamalaharris with her own account. She drew attention when she declared that she would be running for the presidency.
Kamala Harris joined TikTok on Thursday to explain why she had recently gained so much traction on the app. “Like I saw myself on ‘For You’ page sometime ago,’’ she said in her first video.
TikTok, as well as other social media platforms, have been awash with viral memes, pictures and videos of the vice-president since announcing his campaign four days ago.
Harris’ campaign has also embraced this digital wave, adopting Charli XCX’s hit 2024 album “Brat” as their official account title on X.
CNN contributor Van Jones highlights how important TikTok’s influence was in reshaping how people view Kamala Harris stating that “I don’t know what it is; it feels like something extraordinary is happening on TikTok right now.” He stated this in an interview with CNN where he highlighted some of Kamala’s embarrassing habits including her laugh and saying coconut trees while wearing dreadlocks and all these strange things she says.”
“One minute, she’s just cringe-worthy and then 24 hours later, because all these kids took all this content and remixed them into just amazing TikTok videos,” Jones continued.
As such, Harris will most likely compete against former president Donald Trump should Biden decline to run for re-election over the following weekend. According to The Hill/Decision Desk HQ’s national poll average, Harris trails Trump by 2.1 percentage points at 45.7% approval rating compared to Trump’s 47.8%.
