Heidi Gardner reveals she ran for Travis Kelce to host NBC late-night sketch show
Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce reportedly has a one-year deal to host “Saturday Night Live” in 2023, according to Heidi Gardner plan.
“The biggest shift I’ve ever made in this department was Travis Kelce, and it worked, but it took a few years,” said Gardner, who was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. “I Not to give all the credit to the show and the talent department, but I’m obviously a big Chiefs fan, and I’ve seen him do other small shows and appearances, and I was like, ‘He’s funny, he’s charming to me. We did the ESPYs together and announced some things together.
However, “Saturday Night Live” creator Lorne Michaels put an important condition on Kelce’s appearance, requiring him to win a Super Bowl first. “It’s stressful,” Gardner admitted. Kelce won another Super Bowl with the Chiefs in early 2023 and impressed fans and critics by hosting SNL Season 48. Gardner emphasized that Kelce’s talent was evident even before his relationship with Swift became public. “His skills are already on the way,” she said, responding to suggestions that his rise in popularity is entirely due to Swift
In March 2023, Kelce co-hosted “SNL” with musical guest Kelsea Ballerini, appearing on “Straight Friends” and Gardner’s “Ex-Girlfriends” Abby” and other sketches showed his cultural humor. During the “SNL” special, former Philadelphia Eagles star Jason Kelce and Gardner (who appeared in the sketch with Kelce) even threw a tailgate party in Kelce’s locker room, to celebrate the Chiefs’ game day ritual. “I was like, ‘I’m going to get a tailgate in my room,’ because Arrowhead Stadium is known for tailgates,” she said, adding that barbecue is on her menu.
Gardner informed Kells about the tailgate but did not anticipate his attendance because he would be on time as the show’s host. “He was so nice that morning. Jeff, one of the guys from our talent department knocked on my dressing room and I opened it up and he had these cans of tequila soda,” she said. “He said these were given to the tailgate by Travis.”

Gardner also said she would like to have more sports star hosts, including Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, LeBron James and veteran actors Catherine O’Hara and Nicolas Cage, noting Harry Senford, one of the Hollywood icons, never appeared on Studio 8H.
