Is India finally getting its first hydrogen train? Indian Railways Does it apply to British Midlands Trains? Involving TUV SÜD, he arranged the external security evaluation of the Chinese hydrogen-powered train. Persons privy to the plan hope that trial runs of the rolling stock will start in the month of December, 2024.

With this accomplishment, India will become the fifth operating hydrogen powered trains after Germany, France, Sweden and China.

In addition, five treatment tower vehicles based on hydrogen fuel cell are also at the conceptual stage with each projected to cost Rs 10 crore.

An official apprised The Economic Times, “The Indian Railways will possess 35 Hydrogen legacy Trains.” This project is likely to range from Rs 70 crores to 80 crores per train freeze. Each line is expected to have Rs 70 Crore invested in ground infrastructure to enable operations of the train on those or other heritage & hilly routes.

“System integration unit cell and synchronization testing of the two fuel units has been successfully carried out,” added the official.

Finally, in addition to this, a pilot project is being done to incorporate hydrogen fuel cells technology onto the DEMU rake frames which exist and to build the necessary ground facilities that go with them.

The train is expected to operate on the Jind-Sonipat segment of the Northern Railway. “Assembly of the prototype trains is expected to occur at the Integrated Coach Factory, Chennai,” the official said.

A 1 MW polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) electrolyzer in Jedd will supply hydrogen to the Haryana trains.

GreenH Electrothesis has reported that the operational electrolyser will produce nearly 430 kilos of hydrogen every day for less than a month.

In addition, the statement said that “the refueling site of Jind will be provided with a 3,000-kilogram hydrogen storage system, hydrogen gas compressors, and two hydrogen refueling systems with integrated precoolers for quick train re-fueling.”
