On Wednesday, the IPL Governing Council is to hold a meeting with all 10 franchises’ owners in Mumbai in order to discuss probable changes in team purse and retention policies. The arrangement could be made for raising team purse up to INR 120 crore maximum and allowing six retentions, which might include the use of Right To Match (RTM) options.
It is essential that necessary guidelines and procedures are established as a big auction is scheduled at the end of this year. In one BCCI-team owners meeting, there may be five areas where different opinions could develop on some aspects.
BCCI will consider feedback from the teams into its decision-making process though it does not officially announce any rules and regulations on how teams should be formed.
“The current team purse should go up by at least 20% to 25%, as was stated by more than one franchise that PTI spoke to”, said a senior official from an IPL franchise who did not want his name disclosed
“I think that (increase of purse) is happening for sure. The standard increase should be anywhere between 20 to 25 percent and hence anything in the range of Rs 120 crore to 125 crore will be a fair deal. Most franchises would agree to it,” a senior official of one of the IPL franchises told PTI on conditions of anonymity.
The main problem lies in finding common ground among teams that have different interests since they need players retained.
A major franchise has even proposed eight retentions including RTMs, but other teams will perhaps not agree with it.
Today’s IPL allows four retention per annum; three must be Indians whereas one can come from abroad. According to most sides, no more than five or six players should be retained.
“Obviously , continuity and maintaining a core is very important going forward. May be allow six (retentions) including a couple of RTM cards with at least one uncapped player being kept in the mix. But there could be some debate over the number of overseas retentions.
“There are teams like Delhi Capitals (Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (Pat Cummins, Heinrich Klaasen and Travis Head), who would want more than one overseas retention,” an IPL source added.
The ‘Impact Player’ rule is a contentious issue with India’s successful T20 World Cup captain Rohit Sharma and prolific batsman Virat Kohli expressing concerns about its potential influence on the growth of all-round cricketers. However, the franchises are likely to embrace the concept of having 12 players available for each match.
It is arguably BCCI’s responsibility to protect all-rounders as they are becoming scarce due to this rule because they apparently do cricket business
However, Chennai Super Kings might argue that if Impact Player rule was removed, it would mean Mahendra Singh Dhoni their talisman would continue for another year.
Dhoni who comes in at No.8 currently will no longer be able to do that once you remove impact player rule since he cannot play Shiva Dube in final XI without using his bowling which batters expose regularly
Furthermore, discussions will also be held on IPL Gaming Rights as well as revenue sharing from IPL’s Central Merchandising pool.
