A report by Cricbuzz stated that with focus on retention, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has started discussions with Indian Premier Leagues (IPL) franchises with the policy likely to be agreed on by end of this month.
The board has begun the process and sought views of CEOs ahead of a mega auction later in the year.
This is in addition to its three-year salary cap consultation with franchises.
According to Cricbuzz’s report, ‘BCCI is expected to maintain the Impact Player rule for the time being’.
Among issues regarding retention BCCI had multiple opinions
‘While most teams were asking for 5-7 retentions’, one franchise wanted 8 retentions.
Some teams also threw out ideas like ‘no retention at all’, as per the report.
In 2021 IPL Auction, all franchises could retain up to four players maximum according to IPL rules.
There were also contrasting opinions about how much money should be in each franchise’s purse.
Rs100 crore is currently spent annually by each team, but there exists a possibility of raising it by Rs20 crore more during next auction
Right To Match (RTM) cards were not used in 2021 auction while asking views from franchises was among things BCCI sought their opinion on.
By July end, it is expected that some CEO would not be available making a meeting between them and board impossible.
