According to the authorities, a life sentence escapee who had been imprisoned for murder since last week when he fled from a transportation truck was caught at a hotel in North Carolina on Friday.
Ramone Alston, 30, escaped from the van during the arrival of University of North Carolina Gastroenterology Hospital in Hillsborough. It arrived at Hillsborough where he was being taken for medical treatment. He broke free from his leg shackles and ran away into nearby woods while handcuffed.
The department said that Alston was arrested around 2 am at Kannapolis hotel located about 110 miles southwest of Hillsborough near Charlotte. There were no injuries recorded.
Department Secretary Todd Ishe Todd Ishee said “I am grateful to our DAC staff and to the support and efforts of the hundreds of local, state and federal public safety officers who assisted in the search and investigation that resulted in Alston being safely taken into custody,” Department Secretary Todd Ishii stated “This has been an incredible collaborative effort.”
Alston had already been serving time behind bars at Bertie Correctional Facility in Windsor ever since his conviction for killing Malah Williams aged one year old. A car passing by shot him causing his death as he played outside his apartment. His death came three days later.
According to the release, Alston will be charged with felony escape and transferred to a maximum security unit within the state’s prison system.
The department says that shortly after that arrest woman described as an acquaintance with him was detained in Alamance County on felony aiding and abetting a fugitive charges. Whoever helped is also subject to charges.
