Ricky Ponting, who recently left the Delhi Capitals, is still interested in coaching opportunities in the Indian Premier League and has disclosed that the team plans to name an Indian coach as his successor.
Ponting acknowledges that despite his departure from IPL team being a result of no awards, he resigned as head coach of the Delhi Capitals last month after seven years at the helm and would like another shot at it.
“I’d love to coach again in the IPL. I’ve had a great time every year that I’ve been involved, whether that was in the early days as a player or the couple of years I had at Mumbai as head coach there,” he said on The ICC Review podcast, as per PTI.
“I mean my seven seasons at Delhi didn’t really materialise how I would’ve liked them to or certainly how they would’ve wanted them to.”
“Me going there was all about trying to bring some silverware to the team and that didn’t happen,” he conceded.
Ponting has said that Delhi Capitals might be looking for a contributor who can devote more time during off-season.
“What you’ll find is that they’ll probably end up with an Indian-based head coach. Certainly that’s some of the dialogue that I’ve had with them anyway,” he said.
“They made it pretty clear that they wanted to head in a different direction with someone that could give them a bit more time and a bit more availability through the off-season,” he said.
“More than anything, just be able spend a little bit more time over there with lot of local players. And I couldn’t do any those other things because whatever else I have going on,” Ponting said
“But yeah, look, my period there was fantastic. Met so many good people over there, worked with so many nice people including very good players along those years also. There might be something maybe coming up for me over next couple of months or so and I’d really love to be coaching in the IPL again next season,” he said.
With Matthew Mott leaving, England will be without a head coach and Ponting has said that he is not interested in taking on coaching responsibilities at international level.
“No, I wouldn’t ever consider doing that actually,” he said.
Ponting was approached about becoming the coach of the England Test team but eventually New Zealander Brendon McCullum took the role.
“I’m on record saying that international jobs for me right now, are not really where my life is at, as there’s just so much more time taken up with an international job,” he said.
“Coaching other international teams is one thing, coaching England for an Australian is probably something slightly different, but right now there’s sort of enough on my plate as I’ve got a bit more coming up in the next couple of months in the UK”, he added.
Ponting has also announced that he will join Australia’s commentary crew for three T20Is and five ODIs against England next month.
“There’s some white-ball cricket coming up in Australia, which I’ll be going to cover, so no, at this time they could scratch me from the list if my name was on it.”
“I’ve got other stuff too, with my TV commitments and things that I do and also trying to balance that out with having a decent amount of home time, which I haven’t had much of the last couple of years anyway,” he continued.
