Scott Bolan Be a leader in replacing injured patients Josh Hazlewood in the upcoming day-night test in Adelaide. This marks Bolan’s return to international cricket after an 18-month hiatus.
The situation mirrors that on the eve of the World Test Championship final against India at The Oval. Hazlewood’s injury also paved the way for Boland’s selection.
Boland’s memorable Ashes performance on his Test debut at the MCG remains a highlight. However, the Victorian bowler believes his final contribution at the World Trade Center was the best bowling performance of his career.
“Throughout the game, I would say yes (it was),” he told cricket.com.au recently.
He rated his performance in the WTC finals higher than his heroics at the MCG.
“I thought I probably started a little slow in the first game, but once I got into the game, especially in the second game… I thought it was my most complete performance.”
Boland admitted to being nervous initially about playing Duke in England.
“I was very nervous going into the tournament. I hadn’t played in a while. It was the first time I was bowling in England with a Duke ball, so I found… something new.
As the game progressed, his confidence grew.
“Once I got over that first spell, I thought I played really well the whole game.”
Boland’s self-assessment is not bragging. It’s part of his analytical approach to maintaining peak performance.
When he feels out of form, he reviews his bowling action and focuses on specific elements of technique.
“I’m just checking the alignment in the crease and on the run-up,” Boland said.
He believes run-up speed is a key factor in bowling consistency.
“Generally, if my runs are a little bit slow, then I’m going to back off a little bit (in his bowling action).”
Maintaining your run-up speed ensures proper jumping and pitching.
“But if my run-up speed stays the same and my jump stays straight, then I’m usually in a good position to be in line with where the ball is going to land.”
Boland uses specific matches as benchmarks for his bowling action.
“One of the games I watched was the first game I played in the second Test in Sydney. Then I watched a spell at Hobart – the Test after that – and I thought my movement was pretty good too. Then comes the World Test Championship (final).
These games can serve as a reference point for assessing his current form.
“Even now, two years on, those three games are still things I look back on – I was in a really good position with my movements and I’ll see if things change.”
He gained confidence from his performances against top players.
“Just to strengthen that you can play against the best players in the world.”
Boland’s Test career includes 35 wickets at an average of 20.34 in 10 games. He has dealt with knee and ankle issues earlier this season.
However, he performed well with the pink ball in the recent Premier XI match against India. This strengthens his case for playing the Adelaide Test.
