NEW DELHI: England‘s white-ball captain Jos Buttler hopes to make working under head coach Brendon McCullum the “most enjoyable part of his career” and is looking forward to it.
Recently, McCullum was handed extra responsibility with England’s white-ball teams after seeing success with the Test team. England under his tutelage altered their style of play and were known as “Bazball” because of how quickly they scored runs in red-ball cricket.
But beginning in January 2025-along with England’s white-ball tour of India and the ICC Champions Trophy-McCullum will be in control of both the Test and white-ball squads.
Buttler gave an explanation of his friendship with the former New Zealand batsman, stating that McCullum’s background will be beneficial to him as England’s limited-overs captain.
“I have a bit of a relationship with Baz (Brendon McCullum) but I’m looking forward to spending more time with him. I’m looking forward to digging into the cricket side of things. He will help me so much as a captain,” he told Sky Sports, as per IANS.
Buttler also stressed that he changed his objectives during McCullum’s time to achieve greater success in the latter part of his career.
“We’re similar in the way we see the game but just getting to spend time with him and opening my eyes to certain things or the other way around. For me, I want this to be the most enjoyable part of my career. I’ve played for a decent amount of time now so maybe a shift in the goalposts of what you really want to achieve and for me that’s helping guys become what they can be and building towards two big events later on,” he added.
Buttler missed the three-match T20I series owing to the same calf issue, and on Sunday he was ruled out of the ODI series against Australia? Harry Brook was selected to lead England during the series in his place. The last T20I match was cancelled in Manchester owing to weather, and the series finished in a 1-1 draw.
Buttler last played against India in the T20 World Cup semifinal, which England lost in Guyana on June 27.
Having played fifteen One-Day Internationals, Brook will captain England for the first time in an international cricket series against Australia. During England’s Test series against Sri Lanka, Brook, 25, served as vice captain when Ben Stokes was ill and Ollie Pope took over as captain.
