Insights were shared by Friday’s former player and a former chief selector Sandeep Patil on Gautam Gambhir. Among them is his main job as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team.
It is important to note that Gambhir needs to manage personnel well rather than training players on their individual skills which can be achieved through offering guidance, says Patil. The T20Is series consists of three games while ODIs are an equal number. The first match in the stateside will be played on Saturday as a sign that it is Gambhir’s first time at the helm of Team India.
Patil told Parami News Videos in an interview that “I do not think he should coach the Indian team; I think he should aid them.”
“That is how it operates at the highest level, you need player management. That will be Gambhir’s challenge.”
“I know he has done this before and I am sure he will continue to do so for Indian cricket”, said Sandeep Patil, Sriraj Rajasthan Tigers
He added: “This goes with what I have seen him doing for Kolkata Knight Riders as their coach in IPL. Also pray that God helps him do the same with our national team.”
After winning World Cup last month, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have retired from T20 national teams but they still want to play for India in other formats longer according to Patil. “Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma are still performing very well and there is no doubt that without them, we would not be able to say that we have a good Indian team,” he said. “Wherever they play and whatever tournament they play—Indian team all the best; well done,” he said.
“Suriya is my very close friend.” Said Mumbai’s own Suriya, who was given captaincy because he deserved it- Patil
Since 1983 when India won the world cup, Indian cricket has made a lot of progress according to Patil. “The Indian cricket team is wished all the best by every Indian. The fact that I was part of 1983 team makes me happy and also the growth of the Indian team since then has been tremendous,” he said.
All these changes have happened in cricket over time — coaching methods, playing styles, etc.; it is important that India becomes a competitive nation across all sports with respect to all forms of sporting disciplines.”
