To break the monotony and enjoy different tastes, we sometimes go out for dinner or order in. When it comes to food, there are times when emotional ties are built over time with them as well as with places that have been ordering us. In contrast to this loss of trust shown by instances like foreign components found in food can be remembered as some awful moments. Contamination of food is a major problem in India which has been highlighted through numerous similar incidents revealed via social media indicating how much confusion prevails over the country’s food safety laws.
Listed below are some recent happenings that have seriously undermined confidence in the functioning of the mechanisms that oversee food safety:
Fingers in ice cream: Just some few weeks back, Orlem Brandon Serrao, a Mumbai based medic was left horrified after he purchased ice cream from an online shop called Yummo Ice Creams only to discover human finger on top of it. He released a video saying he was lucky enough not to swallow it. The doctor recalls feeling traumatized: “Being a doctor I know how body parts look like. On close inspection, underneath were nail marks and fingerprint marks. It looked like a thumb.” Traumatized me.
Cockroaches in dosa: A woman who ordered plain dosa at Madras café in Delhi found eight cockroaches crawling inside her meal. She realized she had just placed her phone next to the roach and started recording but the hotel staff did not let her completely record all parts she was eating but instead came from middle and took away plate. Later on woman reported about this incident into police station.
Worms on kebab: However, another customer captured live insects crawling on kebabs at a restaurant located at Rajouri Gardens within Delhi. And shared that footage via social media platforms with one shortbread plate containing two pieces and also kebab skewer where bugs could be seen clearly moving around on the kebab hence making her feel nauseous.
The little mouse that died among the chickens: In a different scenario, a Mumbai resident discovered a dead rat in his chicken curry, which he had ordered from a Punjabi restaurant in Mumbai. The customer initially did not notice anything wrong with the curry and ate it. But later he got suspicious about the meat and that is when he realized it was actually a small mouse. Afterwards, the restaurant manager was reported to police by him while two chefs were arrested subsequently.
Death from expired cake: There have been cases of 10-year-old girl’s demise after her family ordered an already expired birthday cake for her in Patiala through Zomato on March 2024. The incident sparked uproar online and brought up concerns over how cloud kitchens are regulated on takeaway platforms.
Live cockroaches in Talili: Another recent case involved a passenger in an Indian train who found live cockroach in his meal bought via IRCTC. This surprised him because he took a video recording of what he witnessed and posted it on Reddit. According to videos shared on social media, there was one live cockroach seen inside Gulab Jammon by other passengers as well.
