Intimacy coordinator is referred to as the reason for something existing on a movie set. This has greatly been discussed in Hollywood causing a great deal of controversy among lead actors and actress. This fear was recently expressed by Michael Douglas who believed that these coordinators take away control from film producers and actors. And this sentiment leads to endless talks about its place and significance in the industry.
According to Michael Douglas, whose performances are famous for such sexy scenes like Fatal Attraction (1987) and Basic Instinct (1992), he has noticed a big shift in how sex scenes are filmed in Hollywood.
The actor shared his thoughts with Radio Times during a recent interview, mentioning decreasing use of sex scenes in movies and the profession’s increased engagement with intimacy coordinators.
He contrasted fight scenes with sex scenes, revealing that they were both planned carefully so that they had to be kept comfortable for partner interactions. “As far as I am concerned it is my responsibility to make sure she’s comfortable. It gets stated to her precisely say ‘well if she moves here she touches you.’ It takes ages but seems organic What good theatre looks like is what happens,” said Douglas.
Douglas’ position against intimacy coordinators is not new at all. In his early career he admitted once that any misbehavior by actors would be solved between themselves, hence those who did not would get another chance. Reflecting on the sexually explicit films he starred in previously, he recalled “We laugh now at what it would be like having an intimacy coordinator working with us”
After #MeToo movement occurred in Hollywood setting up intimate coordinators on film locations increased as part of efforts aimed at making such areas safer and more respectful for all parties involved.Limitation of creative freedomIf according to others can even lead one to troubleThis measure ensures safe environment during intimate moments between actors which means it prevents improper behaviors though others believe such measures constrain creativity
Meanwhile another Hollywood star named Kate Winslet also offered her opinion on the matter. Having shot intimate scenes throughout her career, Winslet supports the idea of having intimacy coordinators. According to her, they provide an added layer of safety and professionalism that helps actors perform well.
Thus, Hollywood’s split over intimacy coordinators brings out a larger debate around balancing artistic expression with safety and respect. This conversation will likely go on as the industry evolves mirroring the dynamic change in contemporary moviemaking.
