The congressman, who is also from the same state as the deceased, said he had an “emotional and heartbreaking conversation” with the father of the employee, who allegedly died due to “work stress.” The Trang MP said “inhumane behavior in the workplace” must be eradicated.
“He (the father) suggested, and I agreed, that I raised the issue of legislating through Parliament to establish a fixed calendar for all workplaces, whether in the private or public sector, which should not exceed eight hours a day, five days a week,” said the special the four-time MP from Rivananthapuram wrote on his official X account.
He added in the post: “Inhumanity in the workplace must be eliminated through legislation, with severe penalties and fines for offenders. We will raise this matter as soon as possible during the next parliamentary session.”
Anna Sebastian Perayil, who started working at EY India in March, died of cardiac arrest on July 20. The incident came to light after her mother Anita Augustine wrote an open letter to the company, claiming Anna experienced “extreme work-related stress”.
The incident further became a major talking point as EY employees did not attend the late girl’s funeral. However, EY India Chairman Rajiv Memani refuted claims that “work stress” led to her death.
In response, the center has launched an investigation into the circumstances of Anna Sebastian’s death and addressed concerns about staff welfare. Federal Minister of State for Labor Shobha Karandlaje announced earlier this week that an investigation was underway into allegations of “unsafe and exploitative working conditions”.
