Chhath Puja is one of the holiest festivals in North India and is performed with great enthusiasm and devotion. The first day is known as ‘Nahay Khay’ where devotees bathe in rivers or any other water bodies to purify themselves and their surroundings. On the second day, known as ‘Kharna’, people fast from sunrise to sunset and start the fast only after offering food to the deity and distributing it as prasad.
The third day is the most important and is called Sandhya Arghya. On this day, devotees gather at the river or any water body to offer prayers and offer Arghya, i.e. offering water to the sun before it sets below the horizon. The sight of thousands of devotees standing in the water, holding lamps and performing rituals is awe-inspiring and depicts the collective spirit and devotion behind Chhath Puja.
On the last day of Usha Argya, people pray to the rising sun. In the early morning, believers gathered by the river again to complete all the rituals and prepare to pray for family happiness and family happiness. This marks the end of iftar for all, with family, friends and community members sharing prasad.
