As India’s coach after T20 World Cup next year, Rahul Dravid will depart thus leaving the BCCI to search for their new leader.
There are several reports in media with many names such as Ricky Ponting (Australia), Stephen Fleming (CSK coach), Gautam Gambhir (KKR mentor) and Harbhajan Singh (spin great) being thrown around.
Among the names going around, a lot of anticipation has been made on Gambhir who alongside led India to a win against MS Dhoni in the ODI World Cup final of 2011 and also gave KKR Indian Premier League titles in 2012 and 2014 as well.
The former cricketer Akaash Chopra believes that due to his outspoken attitude and serious demeanor he may not be suited for the job of India head coach.
“Not bad choice. Because of him being straightforward. Building teams is just one of his many skills. When it comes to auction, I really think high about him. However, we do not have an auction for the Indian team,” Chopra said on his YouTube channel.
“Very strong personality – Gautam Gambhir- The Coach. Yes when there is a transition happening and a new captain is coming up? But if a team already has plenty of seniors then I would be little hesitant because Gauti’s ways are almost like that of a strict father who won’t allow anything, yet when it’s too rigid you will see cracks,” added Chopra.
Now if you have very senior players in your team you need that elder brother type who can look at them with affectionate eyes and say nothing but put his hand on their shoulders without trying to impose upon them himself; that is never going to happen with Gautam. It is pretty simple there with him! My way or highway…when it’s always ‘my way’ particularly where seniors are concerned things don’t always fall the way you want them to. You can do that with young players, which is what I feel,” Chopra said.
Recently Gambhir talked about his outspoken attitude and he said it’s in his nature to be aggressive.
“I am not breaking any rules. I just want to be as aggressive as possible. What is wrong with that?.” Gambhir asked.
“That’s my characteristic because that’s my nature for me, winning its obsession, I am obsessed with winning. That’s the problem I have,” he stated.
