Brazils Rio de Janeiro, which is holding the G20 Development Ministers Meeting, has showcased to the world flagship programs such as Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Jal Jeevan Mission and AMRUT as it reiterates its commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goals (The Sustainable Development Goals) based on water and sanitation.
Damlawi, Secretary Economic Relations at Ministry of Foreign Affairs was a leader of Indian delegation that attended G20 Development Ministers’ Meeting that made significant strides in enhancing global environmental sanitation and hygiene services.
These deliberations culminated in adoption of the G20 Ministerial Call to Action emphasizing commitment to enhance global drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) services delivery.
Dharm Ravi, The Minister concerning India praised India’s good leadership and indicated some key national efforts towards enhancing sanitation and water supply. For instance, Minister Ravi highlighted India’s premier schemes including Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, Jal Jeevan Mission and AMRUT and reiterated India’s commitment to achieving the SDGs pertaining to water and sanitation.
Since 2014 when it began, there have been revolutionary changes in sanitary infrastructure across the nation as this scheme has considerably reduced open defecation while facilitating access to improved toilet facilities. In 2019, India introduced Jal Jeevan Mission with plans of providing piped water supply for every household by 2024 especially in rural areas.
AMRUT program focuses on modernizing urban infrastructure including provision of clean potable drinking water in cities.
Moreover, besides its domestic efforts, India has stressed its strong development cooperation programmes aimed at assisting other developing nations among the South Countries.
“It is important to note that Brazil will assume the presidency of G20 from December 1st 2023 until November 30th 2024 inclusive”.
On November 18-19 G20 Leaders’ “Summit will be hold where all leaders from nineteen member countries and also African Union and European Union will be in attendance.”
G20 is make up of nineteen countries namely: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia and South Africa. Turkey is the Russian Federation United Kingdom and United States with two regional organizations being the; African Union and the European Union.
