Kani Khusruti After the famous victory at Cannes film festival for Payal Kapadia directed Everything we imagine is light, she said her favorite thing about the Cannes Film Festival was “the way it is a tribute to directors” and that is why she liked it. “The director should be seen as the lead character in the process of making a movie because it is like his baby,” the actress added.Yet some extracts from the interview:
“We have made it across”
To me, one of the beautiful things about performing on this international stage is that I get to hang out with my girl stars and crew. Kani is a message to the world: We are here, we see you, and you can do it too. I think this includes all those wonderful actresses and directors amongst many others though. The audience for our movie loved it really much. I think that what our film does for people matters.

“Desire more work that resonates with what I stand for”
There are no small or big parts. All characters matter equally except their roles being hilarious ones becomes great fun. But then again, unfortunately I don’t get to choose all my movies so much as I would wish to do. My first priority right now is becoming financially independent. Still step by step i try to become part of good stories. To make sure they are good I look at how well told they are. They have got a fantastic story with them. The Malayalam industry needs more variety in its films.
“Malayalam industry creating diverse cinema”
Except for a little fall between late 90s till 2010 Malayalam Cinema has always been astounding. Though some people have great stories but there are patriarchal ideas or perspectives in some cases there may be. From the late 1990s, the stories never made a great impact. Kani Malayalam cinema is back to another narrative from late 2010 till now. We also know that there are even better stories with more variety. Mostly I am proud of directors, actors and writers in the industry.
“I would consider it as my challenge if given a similar role”
I was not only given one specific role, at least I think so. Because they were all different films such as Good computer, Killer Soup and “Girls Will Be Girls”. But still like every actor, I wanted to see more choices for me too. However, in spite of being somewhat similar characters; this is challenging though. I try to vary these alike individuals each time I play them. In most cases it felt like i have failed. Other times, I wonder about future roles offered to me such as police officers. How am I going to handle that?
Reason behind her adoption of Kusruti as family name
When I was being enrolled in school, my parents avoided stating my caste or religion. This does not go well with the teachers and administrators. At least they said I should have a last name. My mother had to give in and write my initials as K. When asked for their castes, one of them would mention something like Kusruti or Kundamandi (both meaning naughty) at random. Khusruti seems right to me. It seems fitting since I’m still naughty.

“Red carpet dancing is spontaneous”
Dancing on the red carpet happens spontaneously. They asked us which song we wanted played on the red carpet. Payal wanted an old film song for this, because even in our movie, we used this tune once before; Kani allowed us to experience happiness more fully so in the end we danced
