
New Delhi: India is gearing up to host one of the biggest events in para sports – World Para Athletics Championships — in the nation’s capital next year, TOI has learned.
this Indian Paralympic Committee (PCI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with World Para Athletics, an affiliate of the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), to host the prestigious event at the Jawaharlal Nehru (JLN) Stadium , most likely in November.
More than 100 countries are expected to participate in the Paralympics, which will further enhance the country’s growing reputation in disability sports. The event will be held at a cost of Rs 40-50 crore, for which the JLN Stadium will undergo major renovations in the next six months.
According to officials, a new synthetic track will be laid to meet World Para Athletics competition standards. The PCI has applied for a “No Objection Certificate” (NOC) from the Indian government and the deposit for hosting the tournament has been paid to the world organization.

It is understood that the Sports Authority of India (SAI) has awarded the tender for the JLN Stadium renovation project. As the host country, India is expected to send a large team to the conference.
At the last Paralympic Games in Kobe, Japan in 2024, the Indian delegation finished with an impressive 17 medals, ranking sixth in the overall medal tally. The country won six gold, five silver and six bronze medals in their best performance at a world championship.
