One of the suggestions made by the Department of School Education and Literacy to improve school performance in SSLC exam was to conduct exercises in high schools aimed at familiarizing students with a textbook.
According to The Education Guidelines 2024-25, the department also recommended that each section from grades 8, 9 and 10 should prepare question papers for twenty-five marks and give them to students within a stipulated time frame who can find answers in their textbooks. This will enable them develop a habit of reading textbooks often as well as checking up on references regularly and sensitize them on how important it is to study textbooks.
SSLC score dropped to 74% this year, despite being given grace marks of 20%. Otherwise, the result is 54%. The fall came about because there was an attempt to stop widespread malpractices associated with SSLC exams.
Another suggestion by the department was that pop tests could be introduced where children would self-assess themselves, making them practice examinations and understand how assessments work. There are also recommendations for a number of syllabus-based competitions like debates or essay writing competitions which helps learners grasp concepts in an interesting way.
Schools should have remedial classes after several mock exams for poor-performing scholars. It could be an overnight camp where they are taught manners. Contrarily, outstanding students should attend motivational camps at taluk or district level and assist or guide them towards becoming position holders.
