Trichy: A drunkard rescued on Trichy-Chennai National Highway Srirangam Fire and Rescue Service Thursday morning, staff. On the Kollidam Bridge, this man slept in Cauvery water without any other ideas about entering the river. He found himself trapped on waking up.
Public Works Department (PWD) has opened flood carrier Kollidam releasing it into Kollidam as the outflow from Mettur dam to Mukkombu regulator crossed 1.20 lakh cusecs on Wednesday night.
Sasikumar S, a sixty year-old resident of Lalgudi’s Sappani Koil Street, slept on one of the piers of the Kollidam bridge. At around 1am this morning as water flow gradually increased Sasikumar woke up and realized that he was unable to cross the river to shore.
Srirangam Fire Station alerted by Morning walkers at around 6 am where they spotted a man trapped there. The fire brigade led by station fire officer L Sagayaraj, special fire officer S Ganesan and firefighter C Arunkumar rescued Sasikumar using a safety rope.
But it took more than 45 minutes for rescue teams consisting of fire fighters and police personnel to remove him from there. According to fire service personnel who rescued him it appeared he had been drinking too much.
Colidan bridge
Sleeping in places like under these bridges namely Cauvery and Kolidan Sasikumar used to do so habitually. As such, flood and rescue services have said that they have put together teams that will obstruct people from going into it because its course is expect to exceed 86,735 cusecs.
At the same time, some excess water flow damaged part of protective wall constructed near Kollidam Bridge along with Tangedco UHV tower located over riverbed. Vehicular traffic has been suspended on New Collidan Bridge in the interest of public safety.
