New Delhi: Diljit Dosanjh’s New Year’s Eve concert in Ludhiana faces legal hurdles following a complaint filed by Chandigarh assistant professor Punditrao Dharenavar.
The complaint prompted the deputy director of the women and children department of the Punjab government to issue a formal notice to the Ludhiana district commissioner, urging them to prevent the singer from performing certain songs at a live show on December 31, 2024.
The notice, issued to local authorities in Ludhiana, specifically called for a ban on songs accused of promoting alcohol, such as ‘Patiala Pegg’, ‘5 Tara Theke’ and ‘Case (Jeeb Vicho Feem Labbiya)’, even if the lyrics are modified .
The complaint refers to previous warnings issued to Diljit Dosanjh by various committees advising him not to perform the controversial tracks. Despite the advice, the singer allegedly continued to perform and made slight changes to the lyrics.
Punditrao Dharenavar, who filed the complaint, expressed strong concerns over the impact of such songs, especially on young audiences, especially when there are underage children in the audience. Darenava further complicated the situation by citing a Punjab and Haryana High Court ruling in 2019 that directed police to ensure that messages promoting alcohol, alcohol, and alcohol are not played at public events, including live concerts. Drug or violent songs.
Songs that glorify substances such as alcohol or drugs can have harmful effects on impressionable children, according to a court ruling.
Punditrao also made it clear that he is ready to escalate the matter to the Punjab and Haryana High Court if the music continues to play these tracks. He further criticized Dosanjh for performing such songs while wearing a pagadi, arguing that this traditional headgear should not be associated with promoting negative values.
The Ludhiana concert is the final leg of Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati India tour, marking the finale of his three-month nationwide performance schedule. Initially, the tour was scheduled to end in Guwahati, but the Ludhiana show was announced on December 23 and tickets sold out within minutes of going on sale.
Days ahead of his performance in Ludhiana, Diljit Dosanjh has already faced scrutiny in other cities for similar reasons. During a concert in Hyderabad in November, he received a legal notice from the Telangana government citing complaints against him for performing drunken songs and promoting violence.
Additionally, during his performance in Indore, the singer spoke about the issue of black market ticket sales and defended himself against allegations that his tickets were being resold at inflated prices.
The controversy surrounding Diljit Dosanjh’s lyrics is not new. The singer made headlines earlier this year for her comments about alcohol in music. During a show in Ahmedabad, he promised to stop making songs about alcohol if the Indian government implemented a nationwide ban on alcohol.
“If all states declare themselves drought states, I promise I will stop singing about alcohol,” Dosanjh said.
Despite these ongoing legal challenges, Dosanjh’s Dil-Luminati tour has been a huge success, with tickets quickly selling out at every stop.
