McWilliams avoids controversy with Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers publicly criticized Jets receiver Mike Williams for a mistake that led to a game-ending interception against the Bills, raising questions about team dynamics and recent roster changes. Williams returned to action Wednesday in preparation for Sunday’s game against the Steelers. Williams’ absence comes as the Jets complete a trade to bring Davante Adams Entering the team, the move could move Williams down the depth chart, with him expected to be the WR4 this weekend.
According to ESPN.com’s Rich Cimini, Williams said he wasn’t upset by Rodgers’ public criticism. “I just have to stay on the red line,” he said. Williams allegedly broke up his inside route, leading to an interception by Rodgers. Devin McCourty clarified that the interception was Rodgers’ fault because he didn’t throw the ball away when he noticed Williams wasn’t where he was supposed to be. Williams has yet to earn the trust of Rodgers, who now has two former Green Bay receivers on his staff.
“We’re definitely still building,” Williams said of his chemistry with Rodgers. Williams’ dissatisfaction with the Jets could lead to further friction with Rodgers, who is a powerful presence in the locker room. However, the big picture suggests his future with the Jets may be uncertain as the trade deadline is less than three weeks away and there are rumors he will be moved before then. The Jets’ offensive scheme is changing, and Williams could find himself on the outside if the team reshuffles the lineup.
