According to the National Load Dispatch Centre, on Tuesday Delhi’s peak power demand hit an all-time high of 8,647 MW as a result of increased use of air conditioners and coolers during severe heat wave.
The first time that Delhi’s peak power demand crossed over 8,000 MW was on May 22, 2024 and since then it has surpassed this threshold eight times.
Previously, Delhi had registered a peak power load of 7,695 MW on June 29,2022 while this year it was at 7,438 MW.
Unlike in previous years when the highest electricity consumption usually happens in late June or early July, last year saw an increase in demand with its height recorded in August.
In response to these challenges posed by the present summer peak of electricity demand which is estimated at 250 GW nationwide by the ministry of power.
A press release from the Ministry of Power showed that only the northern region experienced a higher maximum power demand than any other part of country reaching approximately 89GW on June 17th, 2024. However, the area fulfills this never-seen before requirement through inter-regional importation for energy that accounts for around one-fourth to one-third of its total demands.
