New Delhi: A man who lives in Northeast DelhiKarawal Nagar fell victim to sophisticated cyber attack job scamhe lost Rs 1.1 million as a scammer promised him a job in a university in Oman.
The complainant reported that the ordeal began in May 2024, when he received an email from a recruitment service regarding an urgent vacancy at a university in Oman. The seemingly legitimate email said his profile matched the job opening.
Lured by this offer, the complainant sent his personal documents to the email address provided. Soon after, he was informed that he had been “selected” for the position. Over the next few weeks, he received several official-looking emails purportedly from the university requesting payment for a variety of fees, including job applications, document verification, and visa and residency security fees.
Despite the increasing amounts requested, the complainant continued to pay because he trusted the seemingly professional nature of the emails and the scammer’s repeated assurances.
The complainant claimed that he transferred a total of Rs 11 lakh into the fraudster’s bank account. The scammers also assured him that the university’s human resources department planned to visit Delhi in June, July and August for document verification and medical examination, during which all fees would be refunded.
However, by August, the promised visits never materialized and the scammers stopped answering their calls.
