Following a December 2019 statement from the players’ union. Denmark’s men’s national football team has rejected an increase in their salary and instead. Chosen to ensure equal basic pay for the women playing in the national team as a show of unity.
Magnus White said “the men’s team declined to request an increment on their pay” for AFP among other sources, “to improve conditions for the women’s team.”
This is major progress towards gender equality in football by the Danish Football Association (DBU) and players’ union. Since last month, when it was signed. This agreement has made sure that women’s national teams get equal base salaries like their male counterparts and enhances insurance coverage.
Hviid acknowledged “an important step that sees… the same base salary for the Women’s National Team as with Men’s National Team and improved insurance covers for Women’s Teams”, he added.
The measure was referred to as “extraordinary” by Hviid. Who said it was only “a small step in the right direction”. However, he also maintained that there were still more glass ceilings. Which needed breaking down so as to create equality of opportunity and status within the national side.
Under this new deal, both male and female players will be paid an away match bonus at par. Even if they don’t have a home-match bonus policy yet; however. There is still inequality in overall remuneration between men and women national teams.
Negotiations for a new deal on behalf of Denmark’s national ladies squad would now be given top priority by DBU and labor unions once again after summer vacation is over.
Currently drawing against England and Slovenia at Euro 2024 have left them sharing second position with Group C.
