Namakkal: A couple committed suicide by consuming cold drink mixed with poison at their home in Tamil Nadu’s Namakkal town on Tuesday night.
The deceased were identified as S Gunasekaran, 60, and his wife G Chandrakala, 50, of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar.
Namakkal town K Kabiran said Gunasekaran and Chandrakara were involved in the running of a women’s self-help group. The couple’s oldest son, a truck driver, distanced himself from the family. The couple’s younger son is studying B Com in Trichy and is staying in a hotel there.
The couple borrowed money from various sources to fund the organization but struggled to repay the loans. Inspectors said this, combined with their son’s problems, may have been the reason for the suicide.
Inspectors said the couple interacted with neighbors Tuesday night. On Wednesday morning, they noticed that the couple did not step out of the house even after 8am. They peered through the crack in the door and found the couple lying dead on the bed. They called the police.
Police broke in, found the body and sent it for autopsy.
The police have informed the eldest sons. A case has been filed.
