A similar violent protest against the government in Bengal, warned Congress leader Salman Khurshid on Tuesday. While everything looks fine on the surface, this could actually happen in India too.
“Everything seems to be normal here. And also it seems so in Kashmir. It’s possible we are celebrating a victory that is not as important as some may think about success or victory of 2024,” said Khurshid at the launch of his book today adding that there is still much work to do.
“Underneath the surface lies another truth,” he said.
“What happened in Bangladesh can occur here,…our country’s transmission stopped it from getting out like it did with Bangladesh”-he added.
Khurshid referred to women-led CAA-NRC protests at Shaheen Bagh in southeast Delhi which continued for nearly 100 days and instigated identical demonstrations across India. Most of its participants remain behind bars, making him describe it as a failed incitement.
He further stated that such riots were impossible today like those of Shaheen Bagh
“Can I say Shaheen Bagh has been a failure? A lot of us believe that Shaheen Bagh was a success. But I know what happened to people connected with Shaheen Bagh. How many are still in jail? How many can be called ‘anti-nationals’?” He asked.
“If I ask myself whether the situation in Shaheen Bagh will happen again, I’m not sure if it will happen again because people did suffer,” he added.
On August 5th, Sheikh Hasina resigned from being Prime Minister due to increased protests hence creating political instability within Bangladesh. What started off as student-led anti-government protests demanding an end to job quota system morphed into wider anti-government demonstrations.
