Police said Pandey was taken to a community health center after feeling unwell at the police station. He was then transferred to a larger facility, where he died. However, Shobharam, the victim’s brother, claimed that he was also briefly detained and witnessed the police beat Pandey “mercilessly” before taking him to the hospital only after Pandey died.
A CCTV footage has surfaced online showing Pandey inside the detention centre. The family of the deceased accused the police of covering up the truth by releasing only a small part of the video, saying it showed Pandey being beaten to death. A detailed autopsy report is awaited.
The authorities responded to the disturbance by ordering an FIR against the personnel of the police station involved on charges of murder and criminal conspiracy. The head of the police station has been suspended.
