New Delhi: The Uttarakhand government led by CM Pushkar Singh Dhami will implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state by January 2025. 》Bang.
Under the terms of the UCC, couples must register their marriage within six months.
Since the law came into effect in the Himalayan state, cohabiting couples have been given a month to register.
On March 11 of this year, the President signed UCC Actpaving the way for it to become law. Thereafter, the state government constituted a nine-member committee to frame rules on procedures and other matters related to the implementation of the UCC Act.
The Act has seven schedules and 392 parts, focusing on four key areas – marriage, divorce, inheritance and common-law relationships. Furthermore, in addition to granting equal inheritance rights to men and women, provisions were made to end the practices of polygamy, polyandry, halala and idaat.
