The three elephants were found dead in a forest in Raigarh district on Saturday morning.
According to information received, the carcass of the elephant after it came in contact with an electric wire was found at the nursery of the Chukimal forest department in Samaruma range in the Tamnar range of Raigarh district on Saturday morning.
Immediately after receiving information about the incident, teams from Tamnar and Gharghoda ranges, including officials from the DFO and Raigarh forest department, rushed to the spot.
The forest department sent Manoj Pandey, field director and forest ranger of Achanakma Tiger Reserve, to inspect the site and submit a report to the forest department. According to Pandey, he submitted a report to the department.
Preliminary investigation also revealed that the person in charge of the forestry department’s nursery had repeatedly complained to local power department employees about the disconnection of the 11KV line, but no proactive action was taken, which led to the incident.
During the investigation, the forestry department also found that at the time of the incident, a herd of about 40 elephants was wandering in the Galgoda Mountains, and the relevant Beat Guard did not do a good job in monitoring the elephants considering their safety. The Raigarh DFO suspended the ranger and deputy ranger after finding serious negligence in the matter.
The DFO said negligence in the incident was also revealed after departmental action was taken. In this case, a notice was issued to the Galgoda power department officials for this purpose. An explanation is also sought for further action in the matter.
