Customs officers searched his checked luggage and found hydroponic cannabis weighing about 7.6 kilograms hidden inside. Customs sources said the contraband was worth Rs 76 crore in the market.
The man was arrested and taken to judicial custody. This is the second seizure of hydroponic cannabis at the Chennai airport in the past month after a woman was arrested on November 21 in possession of 2.8 kg of hydroponic cannabis of various mixed varieties when she landed in Chennai from Thailand. A man who was following her was also arrested.
Unlike regular cannabis, hydroponic cannabis is grown in a controlled atmosphere and is very effective. The cocktail variety, known for its different flavors and effects on the smoker, is not easily available in India.
Narcotics Control BureauP Aravindhan, District Director, Chennai (NCB) said, “The THC content in hydroponic cannabis is 30%, while the THC content in regular cannabis smuggled from Andhra Pradesh is 3%.
However, unlike synthetic drugs such as methamphetamine, the NCB has not seen an epidemic of hydroponic cannabis consumption.
