NEW DELHI: Noting an increase in fraudsters showing Indian mobile numbers to Indian citizens to make international spoof calls and commit cyber crimes and financial frauds, the Center on Sunday said it has devised a system to identify and thwart Such calls.
“These calls appeared to originate from within India, but were actually made by cybercriminals from abroad by manipulating the Calling Line Identity (CLI).Such international spoof calls have been misused in recent cases of false number arrests, FedEx scams, drugs/narcotics in couriers, impersonation of government and police officials, traffic department/TRAI officials cutting off mobile numbers, etc.
It added that the government has taken several measures to ensure that telecommunications service providers (TSPs) block incoming international spoof calls.

The TSP has blocked the spoofed numbers following instructions issued by the Department of Transportation, the ministry said.
“Despite your best efforts, there may still be some fraudsters who succeed through other means. For such calls, you can help everyone by reporting such suspected fraudulent communications at the Chakshu facility in Sanchar Saathi ,” the ministry added.
