In the era of something love going digital, Whitney Wolfe Hurd, Bumble’s founder, thinks that artificial intelligence (AI) can completely change online dating. Speaking at the Bloomberg Technology Summit on Thursday, Wolf Herd discussed how artificial intelligence could make dating easier and relationships healthier.
“We will soon be able to talk to our personal matchmaker AI” said Wolf Herd. “It can give you some advice on how fussy you are when it comes to talking with others.”
But this vision is not confined to issuing dating advice alone because she imagines a future where artificial intelligence will take over at the early stages of courtship in essence “dating” for human users.
“If you really want to go out your AI (artificial intelligence) dating concierge, it’ll set you up with other daters,” said Wolfe Herd amidst laughter from those present. “Actually. No. It does. And then you don’t have to talk to 600 people. It can scan all of San Francisco for you and say, ‘These are the three people you really should meet.’”
The idea of using artificial intelligence for dealing with tedious back-and-forth conversations in online dating is not new; YourMove.AI and Love Genius use AI in creating more engaging profiles and messages though. But there could be another level entirely if Bumble were indeed ready for such a step.
“Wolfhead’ tells us what happens if this AI goes right.”
Bumble Founder speaks out as many singletons express frustration with endless swiping and messaging on recent apps for dates.. Almost half of Americans experienced negative feelings about internet match making according to a recent survey by Pew Research Center.
Accordingly, Wolfe Herd believes that AI can alleviate some problems around dating fatigue by automatically matching a user with someone who may be an ideal partner early on in the process. The technology can read user profiles, start preliminary talks and eventually supply suitable individuals for the user to choose from.
Despite this, not everyone is in favor of artificial intelligence becoming a matchmaker. Others think it’s a “black mirror” type situation, and some are concerned that turning to AI for romance could worsen one’s sense of disconnect and being alone.
But regardless of these misgivings, Wolfe Herd remains hopeful about how much artificial intelligence can change dating. She believes that by using the technology conscientiously, Bumble can help foster stronger relationships and more love.
