Normandy: President Joe Biden Celebrating the 80th anniversary of D-Day on the beach Normandy claimed on thursday joint efforts withstand Russiainvasion Ukraine is a direct extension of combat free ravaged Europe during World War II.
Biden spoke to 180 surviving veterans of Operation Overlord and numerous other guests, pointing out that despots like this must be defeated and Ukraine protected in order to overcome “the trial of the ages” — as those heroes who stormed the shore and surrendered to it.
“Isolation wasn’t an option 80 years ago, and it isn’t now,” Biden said. There was a WWII vet sitting in a wheelchair behind him. “The dark forces fought by these heroes eighty years ago are never forgotten. They do not go away. Aggression, greed, desire for power and control, and forceful redrawing of borders – all these things have deep rootage. The contest between dictatorship and freedom is eternal.
In his energetic speech he stated that “NATO is more united than ever” adding that they would stand with Ukraine at this time just like the US had stood with Europe during its fight with Nazis. “We’re not going anywhere,” Biden said. “Because if we do that, Ukraine will be conquered and it won’t end there.”
The president spoke just steps from where 9,388 U.S. service members are buried (most having served in Allied invasions on Omaha Beach). Their graves are lined by rows upon rows of white marble crosses or Stars of David which shine brightly in the sunshine under blue skies over them.
On June 6, Biden will visit this Normandy cemetery; he is 81 but was only three when US soldiers along with British-Canadians stormed into its beaches back in 1944— making him quite likely last one standing as far as speaking at any WW2 D-day Commemoration
However eight years later leader of USA now in his 81s is engaged in yet a different war in Europe, which though having different names and goals from the previous one— oppositely to oppose Pres’ attempts to capture other countries, such as Ukraine.
Speaking at the Normandy American Cemetery on Thursday, Biden drew a direct line between the two, tying them together by defending the rules-based international order. “The men who fight here are heroes, not because they are the strongest or the strongest or the fiercest – although that is that, but because they were given a bold mission,” Biden said. Every single one of them — they all know it — knows death is real,” Biden added: “They know without a doubt there are things worth fighting for and dying for. Worth it all. Freedom is worth it. Democracy is worth it. America is worth it. The world is worth it then and now and always.”
