Varanasi: For the first time in Purvanchal district deep brain stimulation (DBS) surgery was performed by a team of doctors from Sir Sunderlal Hospital, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University. This important milestone marks a new era Advanced Neurological Care in the institution.
The surgery is performed by physicians from the Department of Neurology and Neurosurgery under the strong guidance of the Director of IMS Professor SN Shankhwar and Medical Director Prof KK Gupta. Professor Deepika Joshi and Dr. Anand Kumar from the Department of Neurology, Dr. Nityanand Pandey from the Department of Neurosurgery, Dr. Naren Naik, Consultant Neurosurgeon at Mumbai Global Hospital, Professor RK Dubey from the Department of Anesthesiology and the Medtronic India team participated in this study. The entire process lasted for nearly 7-8 hours.
Other neurology faculty members of the team include Prof. VN Mishra, Prof. RN Chaurasia, Prof. Abhishek Pathak (HOD), Dr. Varun Kumar Singh and senior residents Dr. Janki Makani and Dr. Arpan Mitra.
Professor Shankhwar said that DBS is a safe neurosurgery approved by the U.S. FDA and is suitable for patients with advanced diseases for whom drug therapy cannot provide adequate symptom control and good quality of life, or drug therapy can cause severe side effects such as movement disorders.
DBS is a surgical procedure in which a neurosurgeon implants a medical device called a neurostimulator that sends electrical signals to specific areas of the brain. The technology has proven highly effective in treating a range of neurological conditions, including Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor and dystonia.
