New Delhi: At least five people were killed and five others injured when an under-construction building collapsed in Bengaluru’s Babu Sapaliya on Tuesday. heavy rainpolice officials said Wednesday.
Deputy Commissioner of Police East D Devaraja S said, “So far, 18 laborers have been found and three others are suspected to be under the rubble.”
The deceased laborers have been identified as Harman (26), Tripal (35), Mohammed Sahil (19), all from Bihar, Sathya Raju (25) and Shankar.
Additional Superintendent of Police (West) N Satheesh Kumar said Shankar’s age and the birthplaces of Raju and Shankar are yet to be ascertained.
The injured have been identified as Jagadevi (45), Rasheed (28), Nagaraju (25), Ramesh Kumar, he added (Ramesh Kumar) (28), Harman (22) and Ayaj.
Five of the injured are undergoing treatment at North Bengaluru Hospital and one worker is undergoing treatment at Hosmat Hospital.
So far, 13 people have been rescued and 7 others have been rescued from the rubble.
Police confirmed that rescue operations are still ongoing. Dog units have been deployed to help find people who may be trapped.
It rains in Bangalore
The landslide occurred around 4 p.m. during heavy rainfall.
Some workers continued working despite the downpour, while others went out for a tea break before all seven floors collapsed and fell into an adjacent clearing.
Nearby residents began to rescue the trapped people, and others also joined the rescue effort rescue work.
Citing preliminary findings, police said 21 workers from Karnataka’s Yadgir district, Bihar and Andhra Pradesh were working at the site when the collapse occurred.
The building was constructed on a 40×60 feet piece of land owned by Muniraju Reddy, a resident of Malleswaram, and his son Mohan Reddy.
‘Illegal construction‘
According to police, the Reddy family hails from Andhra Pradesh. Preliminary investigation revealed that the building violated multiple regulations, including being constructed on B-khata land without permission.
Mahadevapura district commissioner KN Ramesh confirmed that a notice has been issued to the builder, who violated all necessary building norms.
“No permission was granted to construct a ground-plus six-storey building at the site,” Ramesh said, adding that the missing laborers’ families and colleagues waited anxiously, praying for a miracle amid the rubble.
