bollywoodace film producer Sunil Darshan In 2007, he collaborated with filmmakers such as Anurag Kashyap to create the musical “Shakalaka boom boom boom”, but their unconventional collaboration did not pan out. The film was written by Kashyap based on a story concept conceived by Darshan.
In an interview with Friday Talkies, veteran filmmaker Suneel Darshan reflects on his film Shakalaka Boom Boom, starring Bobby Deol, Kangana Ra Kangana Ranaut, Upen Pateland Selina Jaitley.
Darshan recalls that as the film landscape evolved, his assistants, including filmmaker Luv Ranjan, encouraged him to collaborate with new writers. So, he invited Anurag Kashyap to write the film based on his story idea.
However, Darshan noted that the collaboration did not go smoothly due to a mismatch in their creative vibes. While he felt the film was well made, something about the script failed to resonate.
The film’s producers revealed that casting British actor Upen Patel was a mistake. While Patel suited the look of the character well, he struggled to deliver the dialogue convincingly. Darshan explains that if the audience cannot relate to the protagonist, the impact of the entire film will be diminished.
Darshan admits that selecting Upen Patel was a mistake. Although Patel matched the character’s appearance, he struggled with dialogue delivery. Darshan mentioned that he considered voicing Patel, which he ultimately did, but it didn’t help the outcome of the film.
The filmmaker points out that Patel’s small role in “Namaastey London” that preceded “Shakalaka Boom Boom” influenced his positioning in his debut as a protagonist. Darshan believes that if the audience cannot relate to the protagonist, the film is unlikely to be successful.
Suneel Darshan is known for producing and directing several successful Bollywood films such as Jaanwar (1999), Ek Rishtaa: The Bond of Love (2001), Andaaz ( 2003) etc.
