Belgrade: A Powerful Storm, Strikes Western Countries Balkans officials have said on Tuesday that homes were destroyed, trees uprooted and streets flooded after days of scorching heat.
Heavy rains followed by hail Heqiang wind hit Slovenia, then moved eastward to beat Croatia, Bosnia and Serbia. It only took a few hours for the storm to make temperature drop dramatically.
Scientists believe that the human-induced climate change results in more extreme weather swings, storms becoming less predictable as well as hot spells.
Videos from the region showed roofs with holes in them and facades pierced by hailstones, trees falling on cars, roads turning into rivers in Belgrade and other Serbian towns.
According to Slovenian authorities emergency teams received dozens of calls when hail of the size of an egg smashed car windscreens and strong gusts blew off roofs causing power failure in addition to damage homes and gardens or farms.
On the other hand, in neighboring Croatia, it is reported that most affected areas were located in its eastern part while about one thousand firefighters came to help out in other places. The village of Bosniac suffered a fire due to lightning striking a house there.
In northwest Bosnia last night heavy storm has left several villages without electricity or damaged vehicles and houses all across the country.
Late Monday evening heavy rain accompanied by strong winds hit Belgrade which caused flooding of streets littered with debris as well as fallen branches. Six fires caused by lightning were put out by firefighters who also had to rescue people trapped inside their cars. Part of the main north-south highway was still closed on Tuesday morning, according to state-owned television channel RTS.
This is “a new reality” for mayor Alexander Sapik but fault-finders argue it’s because drainage systems are poorly maintained while construction goes ahead without necessary infrastructure updates.
As per police reports a tree fell onto a car at Beosin which is located towards Serbia’s north but luckily one person was saved with no serious injuries.
It is believed that the national carrier, Air Serbia, has halted refueling for its planes because of a possible lightning strike.
