India’s recent opening batsman Yashasvi Jaiswal, educated at a Lucknow school, put up an impressive show in the second Test of five match series against Bangladesh at Green Park, Kanpur, Tuesday. He has also claimed the ‘Player of the match’ title after putting up some exceedingly impressive displays. Jaiswal went on to score a convincing 72 in just 51 deliveries in the first innings and another 51 of 45 in the second innings. With his magnificent efforts, India achieved a victory by 7 wickets.
Next, there were no limitations to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s accomplishments. He broke one of the targets which previously seemed almost impossible to achieve – cricket player Sunil Gavaskar records aside. The world record remains 918 runs which were scored solely by Gavaskar in the year 1971, which was the most scored by any Indian batter in a calendar year before the age of 23 years.
At the age of 22 years and 278 days, he toted up an astronomical 929 runs so far in 2024. And with many more matches still remaining this year, I don’t see Jaiswal’s record as standing for a long time.
This year has been very kind for Jaiswal. Till now, he has played 8 tests in year 2024 scoring 929 runs at an astounding average of 66.35 which consists of 8 matches. He has played two hundred and six fifties as well. The aptitude and tenacity shown by Jaiswal have certainly opened everyone’s eyes.
In the second test match played at Kanpur, Yashasvi Jaiswal also became the second Indian batter after Jeevan Mendis to score two fifties with a strike rate of 100 or more, twice. He added his name to that list when he performed this against the West Indies in Delhi in 2011. He breezed through the innings with some fuelling 55 in 46 balls and 55 in 55 balls to scoop the number.
Blazing the governed form, the young batter was convincing to notch up runs at a rapid pace astonishing the laymen and the experts alike. With the World Cup and other series ahead, looking at India’s win and his form bodes well for Indian cricket.
