The BCB has contacted the head of the Bangladesh army to provide security guarantees for the women’s T20 World Cup from 3rd to 20th October amidst political unrest in the country following the ouster of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Sylhet and Mirpur are among major cities in Bangladesh that will host women’s T20 World Cup.
According to Cricbuzz, General Waker-Uz-Zaman has received a letter from BCB asking for security assurance from him as they plan to host this event.
Starting on September 27th is the warm-up round for women’s T20 World Cup.
ICC has been monitoring this after violent protests that led to hundreds of deaths and resignation then fleeing of former prime minister Hasina.
It is expected that ICC may opt for another venue within similar time zone such as Sri Lanka, India or United Arab Emirates (UAE).
The current president of BCB, Nazmul Hasan Papon who has left also with his party mates who were thought by many that they had strong support from AL including several other board director.
However, there are still a few directors left in Dhaka hoping against hope that tournament won’t be shifted out of Bangladesh.
“We are trying our best to organize this tournament” said BCB umpiring committee chairman Iftekhar Ahmed Mithu.
“To be honest with you we have not so many people who stay at home. However last week on Thursday we sent a letter to Army Chief expressing our concern about safety during ICC Women’s T20 World Cup because we have only two months left,” he added
“It was two days back when ICC called us while we replied them saying we would get back soon,” he continued.
“After interim government got established, even though it will take an official word from their side but at present there is no one else except either law enforcing agency of this country or board can give this guarantee and therefore we have forwarded the letter, and ICC will be informed after we get an assurance in writing from them (the Army),” he said.
