On that day as the violent clashes raged around him, Mughdo gave the last words of “Paani lagbe paani” while distributing water bottles to protesters.
On 18 July, a video captured Mir Mahfuzur Rahman Mughdo, then pursuing his masters at Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP), running through violence during a quota reform protest and was shot dead fifteen minutes later in Uttara. As per Dhaka Tribune reports, Mughdo was giving out food, water and biscuits to the protesters when he died.
The video shared on social media by his twin brother Mir Mahbubur Rahman Snigdho showed that Mughdo was doling out water to protesters after law enforcers used teargas shells to disperse them in Azampur, Uttara.
However, just 15 minutes later when law enforcers opened fire a bullet hit his forehead and pierced through his right ear. The Daily Star reported that by the time his friends took him to Crescent Hospital he had already died.
On Wednesday in Dhaka students were seen offering free water for pedestrians while directing traffic at intersections at different point of highways in respect of Mugdho’s sacrifice.
At Dhanmondi 27 intersection one student came up with these exact phrases ‘paani Lagbe Paani’ approached people.
Following the Quota Reform Movement and its subsequent crackdown there was a political crisis in Bangladesh leading Sheikh Hasina resigning from her position as Prime Minister leaving the country in turmoil. Hundreds of individuals lost their lives due to brutal suppression of protests which began as demonstrations against employment quotas but eventually turned into a full-scale movement demanding her ouster.
