Nobody foresaw the historical journey of the United States cricket team to the Super 8s when they appeared in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. Nevertheless, they brought their plans into action with a bang hence securing a position in the Super 8s where they are scheduled to face South Africa at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in Antigua on Wednesday.
Prior to this exciting encounter, the White House has passed a special message to US cricket on facing Proteas in the Super 8s.
“White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby we thank you for your kind words and we will use it as an inspiration for our forthcoming West Indian matches!,” wrote USA Cricket’s social media handle while sharing a video clip.
“They made it to Super 8. It’s unbelievable. We all wish them well and congratulate them for such tremendous success,” said White House National Security Communications Adviser John Kirby in his video.
In their first ever appearance at the ICC T20 World Cup tournament, USA started off their campaign with a bang defeating Canada by seven wickets at Grand Prairie Stadium in Dallas.
Up against former champions Pakistan in their next encounter, the co-hosts had an uphill task on their hands. In spite of being underdogs, USA came out guns blazing to stun Babar Azam’s men before an electrifying crowd at that packed Grand Prairie Stadium.
Bowling first USA restricted Pakistan to just 159/7 then chased down that total transmitting it into a super over. Mohmammed Amir was entrusted with bowling this super over which he ended up conceding 18 runs from his eight balls bowled to USA batting line-up.
In reply, USA held Pakistan down within 13/1, winning this nail biting super over and picking up two valuable points towards there tally.
Afterward, captain Monank Patel gave more details about how his side stifled Green Shirts of Ireland…
“Winning the toss and the way we bowled in the first 6 overs, we took wickets and kept them quiet. We knew they will take chances after their partnership. We knew we were in the game with 160 to chase, just needed a partnership. Playing in a World Cup, you don’t get a chance to do it every year. We were fully committed to every single ball,” said USA skipper.
Despite their final Group match against Ireland being washed out due to rain at Broward County Stadium in Florida, USA have moved into Tournament’s Super 8s stage.
USA earned their place in the Super 8s along with India who topped Group A with seven points from four matches by finishing second on five points from four matches as well.
