Poornima had a lot of feelings, which were quite strong, as her son Rohit Sharma came back to the house after he had successfully led Team India to T20 World Cup victory. All day long, Poornima was anxiously waiting for Rohit to touch base in Delhi before heading to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and finally addressing his fans during a Victory Parade from Nariman Point to Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
His mother was overwhelmed with joy when he went into their home. Finally seeing him after so many hours, she rushed out and hugged him firmly kissing him on his face. Her eyes spoke volumes about how proud she was of her champion son being only the second Indian captain who has taken Men in Blue to T20 world cup title since Mahendra Singh Dhoni in 2007.
In fact, Poornima disclosed that regardless of the world cup outcome, Rohit had planned on retiring from T20Is.
And this is exactly what happened when it all closed for captain Rohit on a positive note as he retired from international cricket.
“I never thought I would ever see this day…He had come before going for the World Cup and said that after this tournament he wanted to retire from T20Is…I just told him try bringing back the trophy…I wasn’t feeling well…even if I have an appointment with my doctor I still came because today is something else”, Poornima told The Parami News.
“I can’t express my happiness. Look at the cheer around here. The atmosphere has never been like this before. The love he is getting is due to hardwork and dedication. Today I am one of the happiest mothers,” she said
After leading India to their second World Cup triumph in shortest format of cricket. Rohit decided to hang up his boots from T20 internationals calling it “perfect time”.
Moments later, Virat Kohli also announced his retirement from T20Is, following India’s seven-run victory over South Africa in the final.
“This was also my last game. There couldn’t have been a better time to say goodbye. I was desperately waiting for this trophy. Its hard to put into words. This is what I wanted and it came true. I wanted this in my life very badly and this time I have done that. It feels great.” Rohit had said after the final when India triumphed.
In 159 T20I matches, Rohit scored 4,231 runs with five centuries and 32 fifties to his name when he called it quits.
